A Tall Order: Bespoke Cranked Wooden Bookcase Ladder for a US Library Project

When a team of architects in the United States reached out to us with a distinctive library project, we knew it was the kind of challenge our workshop thrives on. They were designing an elegant, multi-functional space and needed a bespoke wooden bookcase ladder that would not only serve a practical purpose but also enhance the room’s refined aesthetic.

What is a Cranked Ladder?

A cranked ladder features a deliberate change in angle partway up its frame. Unlike a standard straight ladder, which maintains a single angle from floor to top, a cranked ladder begins with the usual incline at the bottom, then transitions to a vertical section near the top, usually from the point it meets a rail.

Why would you choose a cranked bookcase ladder?

  • The angled lower section allows the user to climb comfortably and safely.
  • The vertical top section enables the ladder to reach higher shelves or mezzanine levels without the ladder jutting far into the room, making it ideal for tall interiors with limited floor space.
  • While you would only stand on the angled section, the vertical part serves as a support to hold onto when near the top of the ladder.

The brief for this custom bookcase ladder

The brief was thoughtful and detailed:

  • The ladder needed to be tapered and cranked. A sleek silhouette that wouldn’t project too far into the room, while still offering safe and easy access to high shelves.
  • At over 3.2 metres tall, it needed to be structurally sound and visually balanced.
  • There were two ladder rails to consider: one for a full wall of library shelving, and another giving access to a mezzanine level above.
  • The architects also requested a storage rail mounted on a third wall, at the same height, to neatly store the ladder when not in use. This meant designing the ladder with two sets of hooks at different heights to accommodate both usage and storage positions.

We collaborated closely with the architectural team, offering technical advice and producing 3D visuals to help them visualise the final design. Once the structure and movement were agreed upon, we moved into material and finish selection.

Beautifully Crafted to Blend In

Although the ladder would be a standout feature, it was important that it harmonised with the existing walnut finishes of the library. To achieve this, the client selected sapele timber, which we treated to closely resemble the look and tone of walnut. This provided the warmth and richness they were after, while still allowing us to work with a stable, durable hardwood.

The brass rails and fittings were hand-patinated in our workshop, giving them a subtle aged appearance that felt right at home in the classic, scholarly setting.

A Thoughtful Final Touch

The crank in the ladder was a crucial design feature. Gently angled to allow more space at ground level and to encourage a more upright climbing posture as the user ascends. This practical detail also meant the ladder looked less intrusive in the room, maintaining a sense of openness.

From early design sketches through to the final installation, the project was a collaborative and rewarding one. The result is a beautifully engineered, handcrafted bookcase ladder that meets every functional need while contributing to the quiet elegance of the space.
